“I’ve been part of youth ministry since high school. When I was looking for a church back in 2005, we stumbled across Northstar Church. I started serving in their youth ministry shortly after we got there—they even let me bring my 4th grade son along when I served! So when Northstar became Gateway Frisco in 2010, I still felt strongly that I was supposed to be part of this youth ministry.

“There have definitely been seasons when it was difficult to keep going. There were transitions, leaders I didn’t connect with, and seasons where I felt like I was just going through the motions. But through those difficult seasons, the Lord began to change my heart. Yes, I was all about the students. But the Lord also gave me a passion and a vision for pouring into the other leaders. And that’s really the culture at Gateway Students Frisco. We’re all about loving one another, being constant and consistent, and helping every student build an intimate relationship with God. Every student has a story, and we get to genuinely love and care for each one. The relationships I’ve built here are for the long haul—some of them have even become my ‘younger best friends!’

“I love what I do. I love walking with these students—some of them I’ve known for over 10 years, watched them get married, and have kids of their own. A lot of them have continued to ask me for advice as they step into these new seasons—I’m kind of known as the ‘relationship guy.’ But I think the thing I’ve loved most about my journey has been getting to do it with my son. What started in fourth grade led to Bible college and now serving with me again at Gateway Students Frisco as the Build Team Students Leader!”

Shon Flowers has served the students in Frisco for over 15 years—before Gateway Church was even there! He’s faithfully ministered as part of the Build Team and pours into the next generation every single week. Shon has been part of changing countless lives—including that of his son—but he would say his life has been changed, too. How could yours change?
