Water Baptisms

Water baptism is a celebration of your decision to follow Jesus, and it’s a wonderful way for you to publicly declare your commitment to the Lord! If you’re ready to be baptized, we want to celebrate with you at our next water baptism weekend.

The choice to be water baptized is a public, outward expression of your inward decision to follow Jesus. Water baptism does not impact your salvation; rather, the physical act of being immersed in water symbolically shows your participation in Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection. When you go down into the water, you’re dying to your old, sinful life and laying it to rest. When you are raised out of the water, you’re stepping into the brand-new life Christ has for you! (Romans 3:23; 6:23; 10:13)

Whoever has believed in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, repented of their sins, and surrendered their lives to Him should take the next step of water baptism. (Acts 8:35–39; 16:30–34; 18:8)

Jesus, the Creator of the Universe, was water baptized (Mark 1:9–11), and He commands all believers to follow His example. (Matthew 28:19–20; 1 Peter 2:21)

The Greek word for “baptize” means to fully immerse or submerge under. The only required elements are enough water to fully submerge your whole body and a fellow believer to help baptize you. Jesus Himself was baptized by his cousin John, showing that the permission to baptize is given to all Christians, no credentials required. (Matthew 3:13–17; 28:18–20)

If your child has expressed a desire to be baptized, this is an incredible opportunity for you to have a conversation with them and ask a few questions! Start by ensuring they have a personal relationship with Jesus and an understanding of the meaning and significance of water baptism. If your child can clearly express their own faith in Jesus, explain why they want to be baptized, and understand that baptism is an outward expression of an inward decision, it’s a great indicator that they’re ready to take this next step.

Readiness is not determined by age but by understanding, and parents and caregivers can help their child discern if they’re ready. If you have questions or would like support in this conversation, a Gateway Kids pastor would be happy to talk with you and your child. Please email kids@gatewaypeople.com or call 817.552.3711.
