With a church as diverse as Gateway, we’re able to offer a wide variety of ministries and opportunities for people experiencing different seasons of life. In fact, here’s a list of 10 things you may not know we have. Whether you want to serve or receive ministry, chances are we have something for you.

Studies show that petting a friendly dog significantly reduces anxiety and stress, affecting morale and healing. So starting this fall, you might see some furry friends visiting Relational Care ministries like Kids in Grief and Reveille. “My golden retriever Mollie and I have been a registered therapy team for nearly two years,” says Steve Melson, associate pastor of Relational Care. “Our deepest desire is to serve within the church.” And they’re not the only ones.

According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, Texas has one of the highest veteran populations in the country. This fall, we’re launching a care group for (and led by) military veterans that provides a safe place for understanding, support, and healing. Reveille will serve local men and women vets and their families.

The fourth most common prayer request from our Amazing Kids ministry concerns the death of someone significant. Most kids don’t know how to process grief. To fit this unique need, Relational Care and Amazing Kids are partnering with Counseling Works to launch a program this fall for children and teens (ages 5–18) who have lost a loved one. In this program, kids and teens will learn to express feelings of grief in a safe and loving environment through sharing, playtime, drama, art, and the support of caring and trained facilitators.

The Safety Services Volunteer Ministry (SSVM) is a newly launched volunteer team that provides security and basic first aid for Gateway services and events. The SSVM consists of certified Level II noncommissioned security officers and active, off-duty police officers who currently serve in federal, state, or local law enforcement agencies. Our Level II security officers are unarmed and wear our Gateway Security uniform shirt. To join the team, email safetyservices@gatewaypeople.com.

What began as an effort to bring professional training to the Gateway Tech Arts (TA) staff and volunteers has become a unique college-level program for students desiring a career or professional skills in live audio, video, and stage lighting. Registration is open now for several introductory and advanced courses for the fall semester!

Alpha is a 10-week course designed for anyone 18 years and older to explore the basics of faith and Christianity. Each week, attendees gather to share an informal meal, listen to a talk on an important question, and have small group discussions. In Alpha, no questions or comments are off limits. It’s a message applicable to everyone, which is why over 26 million men and women worldwide have attended an Alpha course.

Generous Life (Gateway Financial Stewardship) has a powerful two-day ministry seminar available for people who have been laid off or fired or are unsatisfied with their current employment. During the interactive course, we cover topics such as job transition, career acceleration, high-quality resume writing, the art of interviewing, and more. The next seminar is on Saturday, August 22 & 29.

Flourish is our ministry for widows of any age. Statistically, widows lose 75% of their friendship network, 50% of widows leave their church, and most widows experience financial decline. Flourish desires to provide widows with practical resources, encouragement, and fellowship through pastoral care ministry, monthly group meetings, grief support, mentoring, and social events.

This past year, more than 200 people auditioned for Gateway’s Christmas production, Truthical, and our Performing Arts ministry quickly realized there are many people who want to use their talents and have a passion to perform. StageDoor offers six-week courses in acting, singing, scriptwriting, or dance. This fall, we’re also excited to offer creative classes for drawing, iPhone photography and filming, graphic design, songwriting, and more! There is a $25 fee for each course. Registration for the fall session begins mid-August.

Worship Team Academy is an exciting video-based curriculum used at Gateway to train up-and-coming musicians in worship theology and musical craft. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert on bass guitar, drums, piano, guitar, or vocals, the academy has a class for you. The heart behind the Worship Team Academy is to easily equip any church or individual. For more information on the upcoming fall semester, email worshipteamacademy@gatewaypeople.com.
